NHK is Introducing 8K JPEG XS Codec for Live Production using Village Island Codec during the Open House 2021

NHK is working on the development and improvement of equipment and facilities that incorporate the ingenuity of field engineers and the latest technology in order to deliver news reports that protect life and livelihoods and attractive and diverse programs. Among their 9 news latest technologies development, the 8K JPEG XS Codec for IP Program Production.

NHK STRL Open House is an open house event held by the NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories (NHK STRL) to showcase their latest research results.
The theme for the open house this year is “Pursuing science and technology. Enriching your experience.” They are pursuing research on broadcast technology every day, to bring new experiences and excitement to all of their viewers.

The JPEG XS* codec is a coding/decoding technology that features almost no video degradation even when the video data is compressed to 10% of its original size. It also features under-1-millisecond low latency in compression processing.

In 8K program production, four coaxial cables used to be required for the transmission of one 8K video stream. The developed device using the 8K JPEG XS codec makes it possible to transmit two 8K video streams on a 10 Gigabit Ethernet cable simultaneously. Therefore, it will lead to a significant reduction in equipment costs.

Furthermore, combining the developed device with an forward error correction device for IP transmission brings more stable long-distance transmission, and it can contribute to cutting line costs for 8K program production with high-bandwidth video transmission.
