JPEG XS Carriage in MPEG-2 TS Standard is Published

intoPIX experts have been working on the standardization of JPEG-XS in MPEG2 Transport Stream

We are happy to share that our experts have been working at the WG11 (MPEG) and WG1 (JPEG) to extend ISO/IEC 13818-1 (MPEG-2 Systems) to support JPEG XS (ISO/IEC 21122). This new specification is very useful for users who want to use the new lightweight low-latency video compression for video transport in Wide Area Network (WAN) or Local Area Networks (LAN).

It defines a JPEG XS elementary stream header and specifies how the JPEG XS video access unit (specified in ISO/IEC 21122-1) is put into a Packetized Elementary Stream (PES). Additionally, the specification also defines how the System Target Decoder (STD) model can be extended to support JPEG XS video elementary streams. Everything can be supported such as the HDR/SDR signaling, video formats, etc.

Never heard about JPEG XS?

JPEG XS is the new ISO standard for low latency, low complexity and visually lossless video coding. XS means Xtra Small and Xtra Speed. The video codec takes only few video lines to compress  the video, which means a latency that takes less than 1 millisecond! Far less than regular codecs! And with a complexity that consumes far less power than other codecs too as it only needs to buffer few video lines. intoPIX delivers a full range of "TICO-XS" HD and 4K solutions to integrate the standard on FPGA, CPU or GPU, plus a complementary FPGA IP-core for MPEG2-TS encapsulation.

A working group at the Video Services Forum (VSF) is specifying a new technical recommendation for  contribution and remote production via Wide Area Network (WAN) using the JPEG-XS over SMPTE ST 2022-1 and SMPTE ST 2022-2 standards.
