Meeting the Data Challenge in Modern Industrial Vision

Today’s inspection systems are capturing more visual data than ever before — driven by increasing sensor resolutions, higher frame rates, and tighter precision demands.
But with these advances comes a growing challenge: massive amounts of image data that need to be transmitted, processed, and stored efficiently.

Traditional compression solutions often introduce latency or image degradation, both unacceptable in automated inspection environments where speed and accuracy are critical.

This is where the collaboration between Euresys and intoPIX began with one key question:

>>> Can RAW image compression effectively reduce data load without compromising inspection performance?

How the Study Was Conducted

As part of the IMAGINATION European project, Euresys and intoPIX combined their expertise to perform an in-depth evaluation of compression in real inspection scenarios.

  • Euresys, a leader in image acquisition and analysis, provided industrial image datasets and performed inspection quality assessments using its Open eVision software suite.

  • intoPIX contributed its TicoRAW compression technology, specifically designed for RAW Bayer and monochrome sensor data, preserving image precision with ultra-low latency.

Seven inspection cases were analyzed, including calibration, sub-pixel measurement, pattern matching, object and code detection, and color analysis.

Each test was performed with different compression ratios (2:1, 3:1, 5:1) and optimization profiles (PSNR and VISUAL).

Key Findings

The results confirmed that TicoRAW delivers exceptional compression efficiency while preserving inspection accuracy:

  • 3:1 compression → No measurable difference in defect detection, measurement accuracy, or false positive rates.

  • 5:1 compression → Minimal impact, with most systems maintaining reliable performance.

  • Optimized parameters → By fine-tuning codec and algorithm settings, results can reach near-lossless precision even at higher ratios.

In short: up to 80% data reduction with no visible or functional degradation in inspection performance.

What This Means for the Industry

The findings of this study demonstrate that lightweight RAW compression can be confidently deployed in industrial vision pipelines.
The benefits are significant:

  •  Lower bandwidth and storage requirements

  •  Reduced latency and faster processing

  •  Simplified system architecture and lower costs

  •  Scalable support for high-resolution and high-speed inspection

By integrating compression directly at the sensor or acquisition stage, system designers can build faster, smarter, and more efficient inspection systems — without sacrificing accuracy.
